BOOK CLUB is back this month, and we’re heading to Puerto Rico with Xavier Navarro Aquino’s Velorio. Set in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, Velorio follows a group of young survivors who gather around an idealistic leader promising them something better amid the wreckage. What begins as refuge slowly becomes something stranger and darker—a novel about grief, survival, power, colonialism, community, and what can happen when people desperately need something to believe in. It’s beautiful. It’s brutal. It gets a little weird. In other words, plenty to talk about over a drink. As always, you don’t need to have written a thesis on the thing. Hell, you don’t even have to have liked it. Read the book, grab a cocktail, pull up a chair and tell us what you thought. Good books. Good drinks. Strong opinions encouraged.
